RLA Virginia Beach STEM Director, Rudo Kashiri, is often asked, What is the Virginia Space Grant Consortium? Here is more on the VSGC:The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is a coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities, NASA, state educational agencies, Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology and other institutions representing diverse aerospace interests. VSGC acts as an umbrella organization, coordinating and developing aerospace-related and high technology educational and research efforts throughout the Commonwealth, and connecting Virginia’s effort to a national community of shared aerospace interests. The VSGC leverages each dollar of NASA support with more than five dollars of state and other funding to offer a wide range of programs and activities in concert with NASA’s national Space Grant goals. In 1987, a joint congressional study panel met to address a number of issues facing the aerospace industry and the Nation, among them a looming shortage of workers prepared for a high tech workforce and a decline in scholastic achievement, especially in the disciplines of math and science. Congress was also concerned with building research infrastructure at our Nation’s institutions of higher education. Congress passed legislation in 1988 which established the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. The Virginia Space Grant Consortium received its designation from NASA in 1989.
We love hearing how our Professional Development Training Inspires YOU! We taught teachers how you can create 'Centers to Promote Higher Order Thinking Skills'. Teachers were inspired to create GLOVE BOX centers. Glove Box technology is used by astronauts on the International Space Station. Thank you Irene and to all the GREAT teachers for incorporating STEM in to your teaching!!

Hi Mrs. Carrie,
I want to share with you the learning experience that my students had after I introduced the glove box.On Saturday after I came from the STEM conference, I went with my husband to buy the materials to make the box. Unfortunately, it didn't work because the children couldn't use both hands (the fist pictures shows it). But that didn't stop me. Yesterday after school, we went and buy another box and change the design a little bit and the pictures just talk by themselves. In the classroom, I created a Space Lab using a pop up tent and displayed the box inside. THEY LOVE IT!!!! It really was a great experience. I just want to thank you once again for all your teachings and for motivating me to incorporate more science activities looking forward to plant the seed of engineering in my students.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a fun way.
Warm regards,
